Pepper has a long history and was used as an important seasoning and trade commodity in ancient times. During the medieval period, black pepper was even referred to as "black gold" due to its preciousness and high cost. The pepper plant (scientific name: Piper nigrum) belongs to the Piperaceae family and is native to southern India, but it is now cultivated around the world.
With the improvement of living standards and changes in dietary habits, the demand for pepper in China has continued to grow. According to customs data, since 2018, there has been a clear upward trend in the overall export of Chinese pepper. Specifically, by November 2024, the total export value of Chinese pepper reached $31.1587 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 49.6%, with an export volume of 50.95 million kilograms, marking a 43.53% increase from the same period. Since 2018, the compound annual growth rate has been 12.9%. In terms of market average price, 2024 also represents the highest level over the past seven years.
China is not only one of the world's major pepper consumption markets but is also actively developing its own pepper cultivation industry and participating in international trade. The export of Chinese pepper is primarily concentrated in Asia and Western Europe, with key markets including Germany, Pakistan, North Korea, Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Bangladesh, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Turkey. Among these, Germany and Pakistan account for 29.63% of the total export volume, while Germany alone accounts for 20.96% of the total export value.
This indicates both the international recognition of the quality of Chinese pepper and the growing popularity of Chinese cuisine and Asian dishes worldwide, which in turn drives the international demand for related seasonings.
Overall, the export of Chinese pepper has shown a positive growth trend over the past few years, with an acceleration in growth in the most recent two years. In the future, with the further expansion of market demand and the increase in production efficiency brought about by technological improvements, this growth momentum is expected to continue. However, it is also important to monitor changes in the international economic situation and the competitive landscape to address potential risks.
