China services trade keeps climbing as travel and transport lead
Fresh Ministry of Commerce figures show China services trade is holding a steady climb. In the first eight months, total services imports and exports reached 5,070.2 billion yuan, up 7.9% from a year earlier. Exports grew faster at 14.8%, while imports rose 3.8%, and the trade gap narrowed by 145.1 billion yuan. As goods trade faces a choppier global market, services are proving to be a quieter, steadier pillar of the external engine behind China trade.
Travel and transport do the heavy lifting
Look at where the growth comes from and two sectors stand out. Transport services exports hit 420.3 billion yuan, up 28.2%, and travel services exports reached 275.2 billion yuan, up 15.3%. Together the two accounted for nearly half of the increase in services exports over the period. That is not just tourists and shipping containers; it is a sign that links between China and the rest of the world are deepening through movement of people and freight alike.
📊 Key figures
Jan-Aug services trade total: 5,070.2 billion yuan (+7.9%)
Services exports: 1,999.6 billion yuan (+14.8%)
Services imports: 3,070.6 billion yuan (+3.8%)

More than moving people and goods
The mix is getting smarter, not just bigger. Knowledge-intensive services exports reached 1,074.5 billion yuan, up 10.9%, and now make up 53.7% of all services exports. Within that, personal, cultural and recreation services jumped 66%, while financial services rose 21.6%. This is what matters most: China is exporting know-how, design, research and culture, not only tickets and tonnes. The competitiveness of what the briefing calls China services is rising, and the upgrade shows up in the numbers.
