China's Latest Economic Updates

Issuing time:2025-11-25 Author: Back to list

China's retail sales up 4.3 pct in first 10 months

BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods went up 4.3 percent year on year in the first 10 months of 2025, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Friday.

The country's retail sales of consumer goods totaled 41.2169 trillion yuan (about 5.82 trillion U.S. dollars) during the period, according to NBS data.

In October, retail sales rose 2.9 percent year on year.

As policy measures to boost service consumption took effect and the holiday economy provided a strong impetus, retail sales of both goods and services continued to grow, NBS spokesperson Fu Linghui told a press conference.

In the first 10 months, retail sales in the service sector rose 5.3 percent year on year, outpacing the growth rate of goods retail sales.

From January to October, retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas rose 4.2 percent year on year, while retail sales in rural areas expanded 4.6 percent year on year.

Online retail sales remained a bright spot, climbing 9.6 percent year on year in the first 10 months, the NBS data showed.

As China is at a critical stage of upgrading its consumption structure, there is broad potential for growth in sectors such as cultural tourism and healthcare, while the rapid rise of the silver and debut economies is injecting new momentum into consumption expansion, said Fu.

With pro-consumption policies in full swing, market sales have remained generally stable. However, both consumption capacity and residents' confidence still have room to improve, he said.

Fu noted that in the future, efforts will be made to implement pro-consumption policies, stabilize employment and raise incomes, expand high-quality supply, and refine the consumption environment, effectively releasing consumer potential

China's industrial output maintains steady growth in October

BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's industrial output sustained steady expansion in October amid measures to boost the high-end, intelligent and green industrial development, official data showed on Friday.

China's value-added industrial output expanded 4.9 percent year on year in October, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

In the first 10 months of this year, China's industrial output increased by 6.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

The industrial output is used to measure the activity of large enterprises, each with an annual main business turnover of at least 20 million yuan (about 2.8 million U.S. dollars).

A breakdown of the data showed that the manufacturing sector's value-added output increased by 4.9 percent year on year last month, while the mining sector's value-added output grew by 4.5 percent. The value-added output of the electricity, heat, gas, and water production and supply sectors rose by 5.4 percent.

The relatively rapid growth in industrial output in October is an essential force in stabilizing the economy, said Fu Linghui, NBS spokesperson, at a press conference.

Out of the 41 major industries, 29 reported increases in value-added output last month, Fu said, adding that the value-added output of equipment manufacturing rose 8 percent year on year, becoming an important force underpinning the entire industrial production.

Fu noted that the high-end and digital transformation of China's industry is gaining steam in October, as the value-added output of high-tech manufacturing and digital product manufacturing rose 7.2 percent and 6.7 percent year on year, respectively.

The spokesperson also highlighted the momentum in sound production for new energy products, noting that the output of lithium-ion batteries for automobiles and new energy vehicles increased by 30.4 percent and 19.3 percent, respectively

China sees record number of railway passenger trips in Jan.-Oct.

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's railway system handled a record-high number of passenger trips during the first 10 months of 2025, data from China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. showed on Sunday.

In the January-October period, the number of railway passenger trips totaled 3.95 billion across the country, up 6.4 percent from a year earlier, according to the railway operator.

The operator said that since the beginning of this year, it has prioritized safe and orderly travel while also working to meet the growing diversity of passenger demands. For instance, it provided 2,049 tourism-focused train services in the first 10 months, up 28.1 percent year on year.

It also highlighted measures to make travel easier and more affordable, such as customized discounts for students, children and other key groups

China's installed power capacity up 17.3 pct by October end

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's total installed power-generating capacity reached 3.75 billion kilowatts (kW) by the end of October, rising 17.3 percent year on year, official data showed on Monday.

Solar power capacity continued to drive the expansion, jumping 43.8 percent year on year to 1.14 billion kW. Wind power capacity also posted strong growth, increasing 21.4 percent to 590 million kW, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA).

By the end of September this year, China's installed renewable energy capacity had reached nearly 2.2 billion kilowatts, accounting for approximately 59.1 percent of the country's total installed power capacity, earlier NEA data showed.

The country has built the world's largest renewable energy system. In the first four years of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China's energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product dropped by a cumulative 11.6 percent. China has vowed to accelerate green transition across the board and build a Beautiful China in the coming five years.

China's electricity consumption, a key barometer of economic activity, registered double-digit expansion last month, according to earlier NEA data
