On August 25th, local time, the European Union's "Digital Services Act" was officially implemented. This legislation covers various aspects including social media content moderation, e-commerce advertising, and combating counterfeit goods, with the aim of ensuring user safety during their usage, preventing the spread of harmful content that is illegal or violates platform terms of service, and protecting user privacy. Companies that violate the "Digital Services Act" may face fines of up to 6% of their global annual turnover, potentially amounting to billions of euros. In cases of repeated and severe violations, the implicated companies could be banned from operating within the European Union market. Reports suggest that around 20 technology companies, including Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta (formerly Facebook), Microsoft, and others, will be impacted by the "Digital Services Act," which includes several social media platforms such as Facebook and X.
